29. What are the dimensions of the the Cleankeys Wireless keyboard?

1. How does Cleankeys work? (wireless and corded)

Answer: Cleankeys uses touch-capacitive technology, similar to what you might be familiar with on touch-sensitive appliances such as a microwave oven or Ceran top stove. A small electric field is created above each key, which is affected by the presence of a human finger (try using the end of a pencil and you’ll see it won’t work). The sensors work even when you’re wearing gloves.

2. Is the Cleankeys radio Bluetooth? What type of wireless protocol does Cleankeys use?

Answer: No. Cleankeys uses a 2.4 GHz radio, which requires less power, therefore improving battery life. It is also very easy to set up the keyboard to work with your computer. No software is required, simply press the red “pairing” button on the small receiver while it is plugged into your computer, and then press the blue “pairing” button on the back of the Cleankeys keyboard. You’re done. (This only needs to be performed once).

3. What is the range of the wireless radio?

Answer: The wireless range is expected to be 30 feet. (9.14m).

4. How do I adjust the sensitivity?

Answer: Perform the following:

  • Pressing and hold the “fn” key
  • Press either F11 (decrease) or F12 (increase)

This will allow different hand/finger sizes to work properly with Cleankeys. Smaller fingers may require increased sensitivity, while larger hands less sensitivity. Try different settings until you find what works best for you.

5. How do I check the status of the battery?

Answer: Perform the following:

  • Press and hold the “fn” key
  • Press and hold the “num” key (Labelled “battery” in blue above the key

The current charge level of the battery will be displayed in the box outlining 5 LEDs above the F9 – F12 keys. The battery indicator above F5 will begin to slowly flash RED when the battery is at about 20%. The LED will flash more quickly as the battery level gets closer to 0%.

6. What is the total number of charging cycles for the battery?

Answer: The battery should be good for up to 1000 charges

7. How long should a fully charged battery last?

Answer: From full charge, and with average usage of 6 hours per day, it is expected that the battery should last for 5 days.

8. How long does it take to recharge the built in battery in the Cleankeys wireless model?

Answer: The built in battery can be charged two different ways, with the included AC adapter, or by plugging into a USB port on your computer. The charging times can vary from just under 5 hours, to as long as 41 hours, depending. (Yes, 41 hours is correct):

Battery Charging:

Mode: Charge Time:
Connected to Valid Charger (Cleankeys turned off) 4h 48min
Connected to Valid Charger (Cleankeys turned on) 5h 51min
Connected to PC (Cleankeys turned on) 13h 40min
Connected to PC (Cleankeys turned off) 41h

Why does it take 41 hours when the keyboard is turned off? Well, the keyboard needs to be turned on in order for it to identify itself to your computer as a USB keyboard. If the keyboard is turned off, the computer has no way of knowing what type of device is attached, so it only provides 20% of the available power to the USB port. (100 mA, as apposed to the normal 500 mA). Thus, it is better to have the keyboard turned on when charging.

9. What is the “tap on/off “button” for?

Answer: Tap is unique to Cleankeys. This new technology allows 10 finger or touch typist to rest their fingers on the keyboard, similar to doing so on a standard computer keyboard.

10. How does “tap” work?

Answer: Touch and hold the fn key and press Tap on/off. Now when you rest your fingers on the keys nothing happens. Making a natural tapping motion on the keys causes a slight vibration which Cleankeys translates into a key stroke. This innovative technology allows experienced typists to type at speeds approaching that of their mechanical keyboard. Connect to this short video for a demonstration: Watch Now

11. Can I perform a click by tapping on the touchpad?

Answer: Yes. Simply “tapping” your finger on the surface of the touchpad area will perform a left mouse click.

12. What if my location does not allow wireless devices?

Answer: When you plug in the supplied USB cable, the radio is automatically switched off, and will no longer be sending out a wireless signal.

13. What materials are used to make Cleankeys?

Answer: The top surface of Cleankeys is made from glass or hardened acrylic, depending on which model you have. The bottom enclosure is molded ABS plastic.

14. Does Cleankeys break easily?

Answer: We have drop tested both the acrylic model as well as glass. The glass top survived repeated drops from desk height to tile flooring (30” or 76.2cm). It is less forgiving at greater heights. Glass is glass, and does not like to be dropped. However, even though the top may break it should not shatter. The glass is laminated to eliminate sharding and protect you in the event of breakage. The acrylic version survived repeated drops from a height of 6’ (1.83M).

15. Is Cleankeys water-proof?

Answer: Cleankeys is sealed and can withstand being held under a tap for cleaning. However, we don’t recommend completely submerging it in water, or putting it in a dishwasher – both of which are not necessary with Cleankeys anyway. Regular wipes or liquid cleaner/disinfectant does the job.

16. Can Cleankeys be mounted?

Answer: Yes. There are three brass inserts located on the bottom of Cleankeys wireless model. These mounting points are #6-32 inserts spaced in a MIS-D 75 Vesa standard pattern. These make it easy to mount Cleankeys or affix it to a counter-top or wall. If you’re looking for a good mounting system, we recommend using our new custom mounting plate produced for us by ICW. ICW has many different mounting options, as to other companies that use the Vesa standard.

17. How durable is Cleankeys?

Answer: Cleankeys has no moving parts to wear out; it is completely solid state. This means it will likely last much longer than a typical keyboard.

18. Is Cleankeys easy to use?

Answer: A user study conducted by an independent computer ergonomics firm showed that it took about 10 minutes to become accustomed to Cleankeys’ touch characteristics, and that typing speed was on average about 30% slower as compared to a regular computer keyboard. Check out this video for a demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWuXsmMwaKU

19. Can Cleankeys be built-in?

Answer: Yes. Cleankeys has rear-mounting inserts, making it easy to build into your environment. Have you thought about the wall? With Cleankeys, that’s an option!

20. Can it be autoclaved?

Answer: No. That would likely damage the electronics (possibly melt the solder). But since Cleankeys can be reliably cleaned with a disinfectant, autoclaving is unnecessary.

21. Where can I purchase Cleankeys?

27. What can I clean my Cleankeys keyboard with?

Answer: We have tested many different surface disinfectant products with Cleankeys. Most products work well, with two exceptions. Our testing has shown that products containing 70% or higher Isopropyl Alcohol, will leave a cloudy residue on the surface of the acrylic top. Products with less than 70% are fine. We do not recommend products that contain Hydrogen Peroxide. The glass surfaced keyboard shows no negative effects from either of these cleaners. Please refer to our Cleaning Instructions located in the Support section of the website.

28. I have a cloudy residue appearing on my acrylic keyboard, how do I clean it off?

Answer: (Refer to the above questions regarding cleaners). If you have used a surface disinfectant that has left a cloudy residue on your acrylic keyboard, it may be removed, but you need to be VERY careful. Using a soft cloth, and a strong solvent, like acetone or xylene, lightly rub the affected area. You must be careful to not use too much of the solvent, as it can make the cloudy appearance worse. It is recommended that you try cleaning a small area on the keyboard first, before wiping the entire surface with the solvent. Try an area, wait about 2 minutes before wiping clean. It is recommended that you change to a different surface disinfectant.
